North Dakota Insurance Commissioner

Jon Godfread was elected North Dakota’s 22nd Insurance Commissioner in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. In service to the citizens of North Dakota, Godfread has prioritized consumer advocacy, ensuring North Dakotans are better aware of the services offered by the North Dakota Insurance Department beyond industry regulation. He has also worked to restructure the Insurance Department for efficient and effective use of tax-payer dollars, along with better utilization of staff talents. On a national level, Godfread has been an active voice in discussions about insurance regulations including the use of technology, air ambulance service, and health care reinsurance. Godfread serves as the president-elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Prior to serving as Commissioner, Godfread was most recently Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Greater North Dakota Chamber in Bismarck. His background also includes banking and professional athletics. He has held prominent roles in discussions around the Affordable Care Act (ACA), across-the-board tax reductions for North Dakotans, the creation of the North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Fund, K–12 education efforts, and more.

Godfread received his law and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from the University of North Dakota in 2011. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business with honors from the University of Northern Iowa in 2005.

Michael Hedge serves on the NAIFA Government Relations team as the Director of Federal Government Relations. His primary focus centers on financial services, representing NAIFA before the House Financial Services Committee, the Senate Banking Committee, the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and federal regulators.

Before joining NAIFA, Hedge served six years as a lobbyist for the Community Associations Institute, representing common-interest communities before state and federal legislators and regulatory agencies. He has worked for trade associations in the technology and energy fields and also spent four years representing the interests of the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates as well as in the United States.

Hedge got his start in DC on the staffs of former Ohio Congressmen John Kasich and David Hobson. He conducted his graduate studies at Georgetown University for social and public policy and completed his bachelor’s degree in history from the Catholic University of America, both located in Washington, D.C.

Triple-I, Chief Economist and Data Scientist

Dr. Michel Léonard, CBE, leads the Triple-I’s Economics and Analytics Department. He is responsible for providing analysis and insight on industry economics and business performance, as well as other forward-looking, data driven insurance insights.

Michel brings more than twenty years of insurance experience to Triple-I, including senior and leadership positions as Chief Economist for Trade Credit and Political Risk at Aon; Chief Economist at Jardine Lloyd Thompson; Chief Economist and Data Scientist at Alliant; and Chief Data Scientist at MaKro LLC. In these roles, he worked closely with underwriters, brokers and risk managers to model risk exposures for property-casualty and specialty lines such as credit, political risk, business interruption and cyber.

Jim Peterson is a Principal Solution Advisor at ConnectWise.  He brings more than 25 years of IT industry experience focused on securing and protecting the SMB market through education, assessment, remediation, and alignment to compliance standards such as PCI, CMMC, and SOC2 Type 1 & 2.

 Jim started his IT career delivering technical support and design for large corporate environments like Honeywell, IBM, and Moody’s.  In 2008 Jim launched a start-up MSP focused on the SMB market in Northern Indiana, exiting via acquisition in 2018.

 Jim holds a Bachelor's degree in Management of Information Systems from Goshen College.
